Worsted wool. You’ve heard the term a million times, but what is worsted wool, and why should you care?

In short, worsted wool is some of the finest wool fabric used today in quality clothing for men. The process to produce fine wool fabric is built on the ability to capture and separate the longest fibers, which allow for the most flexibility in the creation of the finest wool fabrics.

The foundation for a great worsted fabric is a centuries-old process called “combing”. Metal combs rotate to capture the longest fibers and discard the shorter. At this point the wool is spun into yarn by a combination of twisting and pulling. Pulling the fibers allows for a variety of yarns from light to heavy; the more they are pulled, the lighter they are.

There is a misconception about the weight of wool. The oldest of old wives’ tales is that lighter wool is cooler and heavier is warmer. Not so fast.

Wool’s ability to breath is dependent on the weave. On a hot day, a loosely woven wool (with predominantly shorter fibers) will likely be cooler than a tightly-woven Super 150 worsted wool.
