You’ve seen the invitation: “Ugly Christmas Sweater Party!” *Groan* Not another one of those… and then, you look in your wardrobe. The sweater selection choices are slim at best for any holiday party, let alone a horrible part idea, like an ugly Christmas sweater.

A classy sweater can be an excellent choice to wear at more informal holiday parties this year. While more formal parties may require your new custom suit or even a tuxedo, there is no shame in wearing a quality sweater in other settings. The question is how to choose a holiday sweater that isn’t uncomfortable or embarrassing to wear.

Choose the right fabric.

First, start with the material. If you choose a lightweight fabric, like cashmere, you may find yourself chilled in cooler temperatures. If you pick a heavier fabric, such as sheep’s wool, you may be sweating every time you wear this sweater inside for long periods of time.

Holiday and winter sweaters are often made from sheep’s wool for its warmth. However, some types of wool, such as Shetland, are coarse, hence the ‘itchy’ feeling on your neck. Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon and polyester, in holiday sweaters. Synthetic fabrics are more susceptible to damage while natural-fiber fabrics are more durable.

Find the right fit.

Most holiday sweaters settle for the traditional crewneck look. Don’t settle; include some variety in the neckline style of your sweater selection. A V-neck helps elongate the height of a man while providing some natural cooling from a more accessible collar. It also allows you the space to show off your new tie from Savile Row or keep an open collar in more relaxed settings.

We believe the right choice of turtlenecks, sweater vests, and shawl collar sweaters are also excellent options to consider. Instead of settling for a traditional crewneck, which there’s no shame in still choosing, you may want to give a second thought to other sweater styles for a better fit.

Pick the appropriate color tone and pattern.

What colors are a good match for your wardrobe, skin tone, and personal style? As a rule of thumb, avoid loud color combinations and bright colors in your attire except as accents. Argyle, checkerboard, and pinstripe patterns may be excellent options, but the pattern must match the color tone for an ideal fit to your wardrobe.

However, one of the best choices you may make this holiday season is choosing a new custom suit over your “regular” sweater and slacks combination. If the setting is right, a custom-made suit from Savile Row can create an eye-catching impression for the right people, including your office crush or boss (hopefully not the same person).
